NEANDERTHALS may have died out because their DNA could not adapt swiftly to climate change. Previous studies suggested that Neanderthals failed to adapt to fluctuating temperatures during the last ice age. Now, an analysis of the newly sequenced Neanderthal mitochondrial genome that reveals gene mutations seems to support this hypothesis. Patrick Chinnery and Gavin Hudson at Newcastle University in the UK suggest that these mutations reduced the efficiency with which Neanderthals’ mitochondria utilised energy from food to power their cells, causing them to leak heat. This would be a useful trick in a cold climate, says Chinnery,
